Goal Setting & Motivation for the New Year

Dear Yukon Families,

A new year — and a new semester — is a great time for students of all ages to reflect, reset, and set goals. Whether you have a kindergartener learning new routines or a high school student preparing for their future, goal setting can help build motivation, confidence, and lifelong skills.

Here are a few ways to support your child, no matter their age:

📝 Make Goals Specific & Positive
Instead of broad goals like “do better in school,” help your child choose clear, achievable steps.
• Younger students: “Read for 10 minutes each night.”
• Older students: “Turn in assignments by their due date” or “review notes for 15 minutes after school.”

🎯 Break Big Goals Into Small Steps
Students are more successful when goals feel manageable. Work together to create short-term steps and celebrate progress — no matter how small.
• Elementary: practice sight words or math facts for a few minutes a day.
• Secondary: break large projects into weekly tasks or use planners to stay organized.

💬 Use Encouraging Language
Supportive phrases such as, “I can see how much effort you’re putting in,” or “What’s one small step you can try next?” help build internal motivation across all ages.

📅 Create a Visual or Digital Tracker
Younger children may enjoy sticker charts or colorful checklists, while older students may prefer digital planners, reminder apps, or goal-setting templates. The key is helping them track progress in a way that works for them.
