Native American Student Services

Fall 2025 Newsletter
NASS

We strive to be a strong support system both academically and culturally for our Native American students, schools, and families. We offer many cultural services throughout the school year, and while collaborating with tribal departments, students and parents are more familiar with what their tribe has to offer. We hope that our academic support, combined with tribal culture, will give students many opportunities to succeed.

NASS Facilitator, Kim McCathern

Halito and welcome back to the 2025-2026 school year! It was a busy summer for me with getting files all caught up - which is never-ending, and looking at things for this school year. We had hugely successful Back to School school supply pick up days, where we brought in the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes for their basic school supply pick up and school bags! The NASS program had their headphones, earbuds and calculators on hand as well. We served over 350 Native kids here at Yukon. Remember, JOM is a secondary program for our Native kids. If you didn't sign them up during our back-to-school night (which is when most kids get re-enrolled for the new school year), you can sign up for JOM all throughout the year. Let me know if you need a form, and I'll send it your way.  NASS and JOM do different things, so we want to make sure your student(s) have the full benefits of both programs. All throughout the year I'll be sending out messages with things that pertain to our program such as: JOM (if you are enrolled), cultural things, information from your tribe, or something going on with our schools, using Apptegy. Make sure the district has your correct email so you don't miss this important information. I'm still learning our new informational system, so info right now is slow to make it out. But no worries, I'll catch up!! We welcomed three new staff members to our NASS program who will tutor Title 6 students during the school day. Check out the tutoring info below to see who may be at your school! Any questions, concerns, or ideas you may have, please let me know. Have a great school year!

Note from NASS Elementary Tutor Facilitator, Glenda Bowen

Welcome Back! We are happy to provide tutoring again this year to Title 6 students who are struggling in reading and /or math. Tutoring during the school day is available at all our lower elementary schools and at Independence Intermediate. Students will be selected based on last year's grades and reading scores, along with referrals from teachers. This year we welcomed 3 new tutors to our program.  Amy Brown is replacing Sheena Gaines at Surrey Hills. Tylor is doing his student teaching this year, so Emily Delado is replacing him at Parkland and Central. Jour'Dan Jackson-Bohanan is tutoring at both Skyview and Ranchwood.  This is our first year at Skyview, so we are excited for this addition to our program. After-school tutoring is available for 1st-6th-grade students at all school sites except Ranchwood. Please use the link below (under after-school tutoring) to enroll your child.
